A specialised training workshop for Chinese language educators from Malaysia and Singapore took place successfully on 11-12 January 2025. The workshop was organised by Singapore’s Crestar HSK Education and Assessment Centre (Crestar HSK), with support from the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC).

A total of 103 Chinese language teachers from Malaysia and Singapore attended the workshop, which aimed to deepen local teachers’ understanding and application of the International Chinese Language Teaching Standards (the Standards).

Over 100 local teachers from Malaysia and Singapore gathered to deepen their understanding of the Standards in Regional Language Centre (RELC), Singapore

Professor Wu Yongyi from East China Normal University provided a comprehensive overview of the framework and principles behind the Standards. Professor Qi Feng, also from East China Normal University, presented practical teaching strategies and guidelines aligned with the Standards, addressing aspects such as Chinese characters, vocabulary, speaking, writing, and classroom activities.

Dr. Tan Ah Hong from the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Ms. Jiang Yingying from United World College of South East Asia, and Dr Yeoh Yin Yin from the Chinese Department at the University of Malaya shared their experiences. They spoke about applying the Standards in primary, secondary and international schools in Singapore, as well as primary schools in Malaysia.

Dr. Chen Qi from Crestar HSK, presented interim research findings of the team’s research project on “Constructing a Vocabulary List for International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Chinese B Course Based on the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education.”

Lecturers from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malayisa (UTHM) showed great enthusiasm for the training.

Muhamad Radi Bin Ahmad, who is teaching Chinese language in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malayisa (UTHM), expressed profound satisfaction with the training, noting its effective application to localised teaching practices.
